How to know your skin type

How to know your skin type

Your skin is unique. Nobody has the exact same skin as you. But you still fall into one of five major categories:
  1. Oily skin
  2. Dry skin
  3. Normal skin
  4. Sensitive skin
  5. Combination skin

It's impossible to treat your skin properly or buy makeup products if you don't even know what you're working with. Knowing your skin type will help you to find out which products are best suited for you!?

Why should you know your skin type?

Knowing your skin type will better help you choose the right products for your skincare routine.

Using the wrong products will result in:

  • Increased acne breakouts
  • Dryness, peeling and flaking
  • Burning, stinging, and inflammation
  • Hives and rashes
  • Increased oil production
Knowing your skin type will:
  • Help you choose the right skincare products
  • Reveal healthy and nourished skin
  • Help you adopt better skincare habits

 Skin type VS skin conditions

It is important to know the difference between skin type and skin condition.

Skin type

Skin type means the type of skin you have and it stays the same with the change in the atmosphere, weather and age.

Skin condition

Skin conditions may include wrinkles or signs of aging, hyperpigmentation or temporary dryness and can span across different skin types. For instance, many people think that acne-prone skin is a type; however, people with all types of skin can struggle with acne.

• Skin conditions might also change over time, or can be affected by environment, age or hormone changes. For example, your skin may get more oily in summer but needs to be slathered with lotion in the winter. Or you might experience more acne or oily skin as a teenager. In these cases, your skin conditions may have changed, but your skin type typically remains the same.

• Keep this in mind when choosing skincare products. You may have to find some separate ones to tackle temporary concerns, but you should get a solid skincare routine of products that match your skin type.

How to identify your skin type

To identify your skin type, you have to go for a simple test to check.

Step-1 : Remove makeup

Firstly remove your makeup with the help of makeup remover. This will also remove the dirt, oil from your face. After this, Wash your face with a gentle cleanser to remove all makeup, oil and dirt. You can use makeup remover as well as the makeup removing wipes.

Step- 2 Wash your face

After removing the makeup, Wash your face with a gentle cleanser to remove all the leftover makeup, oil and dirt residue left.
Avoid over washing your face because this will over- dry your skin.
Pat face dry with a soft towel and leave skin bare. Don’t apply any moisturizers or serums. Let your skin act naturally.

Step- 3 Pat dry your face

Pat face dry with a soft towel and leave skin bare. Don’t apply any moisturizers or serums. Let your skin act naturally.

Step- 4 Wait for 1 hour

Wait 1 hour. During this time don’t touch your face (resist temptation!). After an hour, look closely and note the quality of your skin.

Step- 5 Dab a tissue

After you Wait an hour after washing your face and then pat your T-zone with a tissue. Look at the tissue to determine if oil rubbed off on it. If it did, you either have oily or combination skin.

          CONCLUSIONS

1.DRY SKIN

If you have dry skin, your face will feel tight or itchy year round, especially after cleansing, or you never feel like you can get enough moisture, you have dry skin. You might also experience some flakiness or scaling (when you lightly drag your nails across your skin).
It’s also important to note that there’s a difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin. Dry skin is a skin type caused by a lack of oil production in the skin. Dehydrated skin is caused by a lack of water and is a temporary skin condition due to climate, environmental factors or not drinking enough water.

2. OILY SKIN

Oily skin will feel cleaner right after washing it.Your skin looks shiny, or you notice a lot of excess oil on your face, neck, shoulders and back as the day continues. You may feel like you want to wash your face again midday when oil production is at its peak. Your pores appear larger or get clogged easily, leading to black/whiteheads, pimples or cystic acne.

3. COMBINATION SKIN

Your T-zone will feel clean if you have combination skin, but your cheeks will feel tight. Your skin is oily, has larger pores, or breaks out in your T-zone (forehead, nose, chin), but is dry or normal on your cheeks and jawline. Combination skin can be tricky to treat since you have to address two different issues.

4. NORMAL SKIN

If you're noticing your skin doesn't fall under any of these categories and you're free of problem areas, you have normal skin which requires low maintenance.

*Mirror test*

 • If you have normal skin, your pores will be visible in the mirror but not large.
• Take a few steps back from the mirror. If you still see your pores, you have oily skin.
• If your pores are not at all visible, you have dry skin.
